This is just my experience. I started channeling Reiki with just my intent, never using symbols. SInce I have learned Violet Flame and Karuna there have been more symbols to learn. I sometimes do or do not use them. Sometimes I use the sign of the cross on my hands and channel through healing energies. Some people will say that is not Reiki, but all I ask is for the healing energies to come through me and I try to be the best channel I can. I say follow what feels what is right for you and trust your own instinct and inner guidance. All spiritual healing comes from the same place whether it is Reiki or another form of healing. Your intent to be a clear channel for the healing energies is the most important thing in being a healer. Trust what you feel is right and follow your own heart!! That is just my own personal opinion! Dave

I find that you can equate the symbols to using stabilisors on a bike; one day you realise that you don't need them anymore, and that they were simply a tool to aid you along your journey...
My twopence worth,
Love,

I agree with Danny, the symbols hold no power in themselves, but are a means to allow us to focus and "get in the zone" to trigger, to allow channelling of energy.

I think this is an interesting debate. So, in order to generate a bit more discussion, would invite people to view the following article. (its not all relevant but the first part is). I cannot vouch for its authenticity or context Have a read and share your thoughts. www.equilibrauk.com/trueoriginsofreiki.pdf(moderators please move this post if you think it is more appropriate elsewhere) James

i agree with stef according to th teachings by master usui the symbols were only used as a form of aiding the new initiates to be able to feel the energies more freely after a while you no longer need them as you are used to how they feel and can focus your intents more readily.
good luck all on your reiki journies

Hi Astral Yeah you're right........it is otherwise ;D ;D ;D Reiki flows by your intent..............and in Usui Reiki level l, you are taught to use Reiki by intent, and are not attuned to, or taught to use the symbols. love stef It`s true that intent is what it`s all about...Yet in every initiation the symbols, or a symbol is included. So I don`t understand how you can say what you are saying here?? The level one initiation you speak of...?? Huh??You aren`t taught to use them until level 2, I agree...but the initiations? If there are no symbols included it`s not a Reiki attunement you speak of. I`m not really looking for an argument, but I have three different copies of different attunements in front of me including Usui, Usui/Tibetan and Komyo...seems to me there are symbols included in every Level One attunement I have...Did you mean something different? Jim

If they are so unimportant...What in an attunement if one leaves out the symbols...Seems to me the symbols are the attunement... I know about reiju...I know lots of things concerning Reiki....But I know of no one who has been attuned by some one who has not been attuned to the symbols....Anybody thought about what they are saying here? So you just look at someone and think....Blessing...Reiki,,and voila...they are attuned?....Please someone...show me my error in reasoning...Anyone? Jim

Hello Reikijim, It's clear that you are deeply passionate about the use of symbols and their origins. I respect that. My own take on things, is that if you believe that a symbol yields so much power/importance, then it shall for you. (The Law of Attraction supports that). I too used to be an advocate of the use of symbols, especially when passing attunements, but the truth is, I used to 'get in the way' of things. I often read through the distance healing board at the various requests, and sometimes energy may pass through me at a FANTASTIC RATE of 'knots'! It's literally like tidal waves of energy! I honestly felt like I was going to pass out one day, such was the intensity and apparent speed of the rays. Now to my mind, I hadn't even had the conscious thought of: "I want to help this person" Although I always wish to help, wherever I can. And the use of symbols were furthest from my mind. On another note, when I was in development as a Medium, my Teacher would say that we had to go through certain procedures, lighting incense, smudging the room, evoking certain Guides for protection etc etc. Whilst I believe that these were sensible guidelines for the novice sensitive, I don't subscribe to all of these beliefs anymore. I protect myself with the truth and not 'gimmicks', such as incense and smudging. *Please note that I'm not suggesting that the symbols are a gimmick.* I don't expect that we will agree on this matter, but I just wanted to offer another perspective, Reikijim. Best wishes, Danny

Best wishes, Danny Hi Danny, I`m not in conflict with any of the ideas or personal perceptions/ experiences you have shared. Spirituality, is definitely a road of subjective experience. I`m down with your message here... Just want to know if anyone can attune another to Reiki without using the symbols....and Reiju...well...for the most part...seems to be accepted as temporary...unless already attuned in a more classic sense.... Danny...I ask questions...to learn...I do not think I know...or there would be nothing to learn....I have not said openly what I think the importance of the symbols to be....I`m trying to learn though others experiences...hence my question. I`ve asked many this question......So.... Can one be attuned to reiki without using symbols? Has anyone here done this? Tried to do this? RJ

RJ[/quote] Hello Reikijim, The short answer to your question - from my experience - is, "Yes". I guess as I've traveled my spiritual path, my mind has been blown wide open to many things! At first I would be 'kicking and screaming' to this aforementioned change, but gradually I embraced it and now I don't like to place labels on 'things' or people. We are all limitless and brilliant in our own right! When I first started channeling attunements, the debate was raging about the validity of distance attunements. Were they acceptable, or not? Some Masters insisted (still do, probably) that they had to be performed 'in person' to be authentic. And I've read some comical accounts as to why they believed this to be so! One Master reasoned that if somebody requested an attunement in The UK, from a Master in New York (for example), then the energy would be diminished by the time it reached, said recipient, due to the pull of gravity on the Earth. I was stunned to think that this person honestly believed, that the energy 'traveled' the equivalent of a 'long-haul-flight! Let's remember that this is a spiritual initiation, and as such, 'time' and 'distance' bear little relevance. I've written about this elsewhere, so I'll get off my soap box now... What was the question again? LOL When I first started passing attunements, I would become anxious about getting the process in the correct order, without missing any symbols etc. I soon realised that the moment I had the conscious thought: "I want to attune person 'X' to level 'X' Reiki", then the appropriate energy would start flowing beautifully. And it changed several times, just like it would when I was using the symbols etc... I received my Seichim Reiki attunements in an unorthodox way too, but I've waffled on enough for one day. So, what do you think, Jim? I would love you and others to share their thoughts. Namaste, Danny

Hi Danny,
Well...I`ve been involved in Reiki for 5 years. I didn`t work in my chosen profession for very close to two years after my initial attunement....I had a plethora of change set in, so i did all things spiritual in that time...would still like to be doing that as well....soon enough.
I have talked with many people about the symbols...Some present very good arguments in favor of trying to do things a certain way to "guarantee" an envisioned outcome. I understand this approach, as my attunements changed me, and my life in a very measurable way...I think..... responsibility...., a rather large responsibility to another...I mean the way an attunement can "shake the tree" for some. So...I see a need, at times, to be mindful and take consideration when affecting another...Hence my interest in attunements and symbols...Also, i feel much respect to Mikao Usui for what he has introduced us all to, in regard to Reiki...another influence that leads me to want to work in this(reiki) while having the consideration to keep the identity of this system as recognizable...gratitude, is speaking here...
So.....If intention is everything...and i do believe it is...I have a question..that you may or may not be able to answer directly...
If for example a person wishes to contact a spirit...lets say, they make an attempt, and do contact spirit, and it turns out to not be the one they were looking for....how has intent failed in this instance?
The symbols...people believe that Usui used them merely as a teaching aid...I would like to know why people "need" to believe this, when there is no way in hell to prove it. Whats wrong with the theory that Usui empowered the symbols to....do exactly what they do...help us connect?
I see the Universe as one energetic collection or mass...not separate from any other element of it`s self...we just have a limited ability to perceive whats around us, is all...the time and space confusion, that humans seem to have...lol. So to me, it`s just about connecting with, and channeling a specific "frequency' of energy for lack of a better term. (energy and frequency are not accurate terms...just the best ones I have at the moment)
So in an attunement, why does one need to disregard the symbols? What purpose does this serve? And what is left of the process of attunement if one does this? If you have done this can you share with me what happened...? What you thought/intended? What the person you were attuneing felt? Would it not be an advantage to a new comer to Reiki, to have the symbols to rely on?
When I was first attuned to level two, i remember meditating to the individual symbols and having them all feel different. I think it was a unique and very enlightening experience...An experience that further convinced me that much was possible in this Universe that i had only dreamed of prior to being involved in Reiki.
"If I had not felt it, I would not have believed it" That was my reaction to my first healing attunement...I should say...that was one reaction....i didn`t even know what was being done to me at the time....Two years later...I`m an Usui/Tibetan master teacher and a Komyo master...so now I`m in this world, it`s where I belong, but still I ask questions...there is much to learn, and many people with differing ideas.
Thank you for your time Danny...Anything you wish to share would be appreciated...Jim

Quote from RJ: "So.....If intention is everything...and i do believe it is...I have a question..that you may or may not be able to answer directly... If for example a person wishes to contact a spirit...lets say, they make an attempt, and do contact spirit, and it turns out to not be the one they were looking for....how has intent failed in this instance?" I think the simple answer in this instance is free-will. If I, as a medium, intend to communicate with the spirit of Elvis Presley, for example. He (Elvis) may exercise his free-will by refusing my request. There can be a whole host of reasons why a spirit isn't able or willing to oblige in this manner. Some spirits are poor communicators, or haven't learnt at all. Whilst others may be shy and retiring types. It can also be counter-productive for a sitter to hear from a loved one, if they are still embroiled in the grieving process. The list goes on... This differs to a Reiki attunement, because the Reiki Master intends to pass an attunement, the student intends to receive it. And so the 'contract' is completed. Quote from RJ: "I have talked with many people about the symbols...Some present very good arguments in favor of trying to do things a certain way to "guarantee" an envisioned outcome. I understand this approach, as my attunements changed me, and my life in a very measurable way...I think..... responsibility...., a rather large responsibility to another...I mean the way an attunement can "shake the tree" for some. I too have reverence for the Reiki healing systems AND Dr Usui. I often have him present during some of my healing sessions. I guess these days, the type of healing I offer is eclectic. I may draw from Usui or Seichim Reiki, spiritual healing (where my healing guides and spirit doctors are present). I may use mediumship - an effective healing modality in it's own right. I'm adept in EFT and NLP. Whilst I will never use all of these in one sitting, it's a privilege to have these at my disposal. Reiki was a great starting point for me as a healer/channel and I've never looked back since. I'm proud to be a member on this forum and I hope to remain so for a long time to come. I also think that Reiki shouldn't be 'diluted' or changed in the way it's taught, so I'm genuinely delighted that you still hold the values close to your heart. I haven't taught Reiki in a long time, but on the occasions I have, I've worked closely within the guidelines. The first time I channeled an attunement without the use of symbols, it was for my friend, also a medium. He felt the energy in a profound manner, as I did. He experienced the same detox - energetically as well as emotionally and physically. He is, in my view, a powerful healer. Years down the line, he's ran his own Reiki business, passing attunements/teaching, and building a client base. Quote from RJ: "The symbols...people believe that Usui used them merely as a teaching aid...I would like to know why people "need" to believe this, when there is no way in hell to prove it. Whats wrong with the theory that Usui empowered the symbols to....do exactly what they do...help us connect?" May I ask you a question, RJ? Why do you need to believe that the symbols are required as an ongoing process? I'm only curious. I don't require the use of symbols to help me connect anymore. To my mind, the healing system is way more inteligent than I, as is the recipient of the healing. Only they can 'remember' how to self heal and what is best for them. Just my two cents worth, as always. Danny
