What is taught in a Reiki I Class?
There are three levels of Reiki training. Here are the outlines of the classroom structures I put to use in my traditional Usui Reiki classes.
Second Degree Reiki Class Syllabus
Third Degree Reiki Class Syllabus
First Degree Class
Classroom Text - The Everything Reiki Book (or manual that you would provide to the students)
Class Preparation - Get to class on time. It is recommended to avoid nicotine and caffeine the day prior to and the day of class. Wear comfortable clothing made of natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk, etc.) Do not wear nylon stockings or any other restrictive type of garments. Bring two cushy pillows.
This is a full day class, don't forget to eat breakfast.
Introduction - Meet your instructor (Reiki Master) and fellow classmates while sipping on some relaxing herbal tea. This is the time for getting comfortable in your classrom , briefly chatting with your classmates.
Brief Discussion - Why are you taking this class? What are your expectations?
Class Overview - Class agenda is shared with students.
Definition of Reiki - Universal Life Energy - defining what is it.
Pre-Reiki hands-on experience - Notice your hands, is there any energy flow?
Receive attunements 1 & 2
Share attunement experience with class.
Post-attunement hands-on experience.
Learn self-treatment hand positions.
Give yourself a full self treatment.
History of Reiki - Who are Dr. Usui, Dr. Hayashi, and Mrs. Hawayo Takata?
Lunch break.
Receive attunements 3 & 4
Share time.
Learn hand positions to give a Reiki treatment to others.
Group Reiki - Everyone takes turns receiving a Reiki treatment.
Class Ends - At the end of the day you are Reiki Level 1.
Your attunement to Reiki energy is permanent.
Reiki is a balancing energy......drink lots of extra water for the next few days.
You are to be congratulated for having given yourself such a wonderful gift.
Reiki attunements open and expand the Ki-holding capacity or the Hara Line and clear energy blockages. They open a channel for the Reiki energy to flow from practitioner to client. The more a practitioner uses Reiki the clearer and stronger the flow becomes. The attunement process is what makes Reiki stand apart from other types of healing systems. Although others healing arts may use hand positions on the client, only Reiki has the wonderful benefit of the attunement process. For this reason, you cannot learn Reiki through reading about it, it has to be experienced. However, there are some informative books written about Reiki.

What is taught in a Reiki II Class?
There are three levels of Reiki training. Here are the outlines of the classroom structures I put to use in my traditional Usui Reiki classes.
First Degree Reiki Class Syllabus
Third Degree Reiki Class Syllabus
Second Degree Class
Classroom Text - The Everything Reiki Book (or manual that you would provide the student)
Class Preparation - Before signing up for a second degree class there are some questions the students should ask herself/himself.
Reiki II class is not an open class, it is applied for. If the instructor (Reiki Master) feels the student is ready for the class then he/she will be accepted into the class.
To teach 2nd degree to a person who is not ready, simply for the money or prestige, does not serve the Reiki, the student, or the teacher.
It is highly recommended that there be a 3 month period between Reiki I initiation and Reiki II......at the very least 21 days.
Questions for the Reiki I student to ask herself/himself before considering taking Reiki II.
Are you ready for 2nd degree?
Can you feel when Reiki is drawing?
Do you have a general understanding of Reiki?
Do you use Reiki on a regular basis?
What are your reasons for wanting to become Reiki II
Reiki II Class is taught in two three hour sessions. It may be taught in one day, but is preferable to teach in two consecutive days. Whereas in Reiki I you received four attunements, in Reiki II you will receive two.
First 3 hours:
Brief Discussion
Why are you taking this class? What are your expectations? Do you have any questions about 1st degree Reiki?
Introduction to the Reiki II symbols.
Given the names and pronunciations of the Reiki Symbols. Given the meanings (intentions) of each symbol. Receive first of two attunements. Drawing the Symbols
There are 3 separate Reiki symbols to learn. It is important to learn how to draw them precisely, learn the power of the symbols, and learn the proper pronunciation and spelling of them. Sketch pads are handed out to each student.....and we practice....practice....practice. This is fun! As we draw the symbols we begin to get impressions about them, we perceive the symbols and their energy. Although the symbols are often visualized in healing sessions it is utmost important that the Reiki II practitioner knows how to draw the symbol first. Homework Assignment
The Reiki symbols are to be memorized by the next class (the next day.....or after a 2 hour lunch break).
Second 3 hours:
Draw the symbols and write the names of the symbols for the instructor. Give the meaning (power ) of each symbol. Review the use and power of each symbol. Receive second attunement. Experience the increased flow of the Reiki by placing the symbols into your body. Discuss how Reiki has to be brought into the physical before it can be used. Learn the step by step formula of using the symbols in sending Reiki long distance. Practice sending absentia Reiki. Learn how Reiki can be sent into the past or the future. Question/Answer Period. End of Class - You are Reiki Level II.
What is taught in a Reiki III Class?
There are three levels of Reiki training. Here are the outlines of the classroom structures I put to use in my traditional Usui Reiki classes.
First Degree Reiki Class Syllabus
Second Degree Reiki Class Syllabus
Third Degree Class
Third degree Reiki is taught in a variety of ways. Some instructors will initiate (attune) students into third level without giving the class structures to their students for becoming teachers.
Whereas other Reiki teachers do not stipulate between Level III and Master Level, giving their students the title of "Master" to all students who receive the third level attunements.
I have come to know Reiki Masters through the internet that use the title "Reiki Master" yet they have never taught a Reiki class and no not feel confident to give attunements having never been taught how to do so.
I'm not placing judgement here, the title "Master" was given to them so they accept it. There are other Reiki teachers who offer two-part classes. The first class the student is attuned to the level III energies and use of the Master symbol. In the second part...the student is given instruction in how to give attunements and how to go about teaching Reiki classes. I see this as third level Reiki practitioners are in three categories. I was instructed by a Reiki Master/Teacher who believed she was being led to teach third level only to students who were prepared to teach. She was adamant that her students arrange to teach a Reiki I class upon completion of her instruction. This outline for Third Degree is designed for the student who has chosen to become Reiki Master/Teacher.
Third Degree Class
Classroom Text - The Everything Reiki Book (or manual you provide to your student)
Class Preparation - Class Preparation: Before signing up for a third degree class the students should ask herself/himself if she/he is prepared to the service commitment of being a Reiki Master. 8 hour day classes are held once a week for 5 to 7 weeks. It is important that you commit yourself to attending these classes. It is vital that the student allow time between classes to review and study for each each class session. This time period gives the student time to reflect and experience the material taught. Going through the process of becoming a Reiki Master/Teacher is an intense healing experience on a very personal level. Reiki brings about balance in your life. Graduation from class does not close the chapter on learning Reiki. Reiki will become an intricate part of your life, learning more about Reiki will continue through-out your lifetime.
This class structure is set up for five weeks. Depending on class size and issues students and Master delve into...the classes may extend into a sixth or seventh class in order to cover everything.
Week One
The student and teacher both write the goal they hope to achieve in the class. Goals are to be read at the beginning of each class. General discussion on what the course will cover. Instructed to start a list of experience stories. These stories will be used in your classes when you start teaching. Instructed to do 30 days of sending to one person prior to class or during the course of class. If you sent for 30 days prior to the class you will be instructed to give yourself one hour of Reiki daily during the course. Receive Reiki Level III attunement. Learn master and completion symbols. Assignments: Study history of Reiki. List experience stories. Study 1st & 2nd attunements for Reiki Level I.
Week Two
Read goal. Share experience stories. Give oral history of Dr. Usui. Discuss any new experiences since receiving Reiki Level III attunement. Cover Reiki Level I class structure. Discuss information to include in class. Learn how to give a Reiki treatment to someone. Learn how to give 1st and 2nd attunements for Reiki Level I. Assignments: Continue to add experience stories to list. Review history. Practice attunement process. Study 3rd and 4th attunement procedures for Reiki Level I. Memorize symbols.
Week Three
Read goal. Share experience stories. Discuss how sending Reiki is going for you. Give oral history of Dr. Hayashi. Learn how to give 3rd and 4th attunements for Reiki Level I. Outline Reiki Level II class structure. Tested on all the symbols (drawing them, pronunciations, and meanings). Assignments: Study Reiki Level II attunement. Review Reiki history.
Week Four
Read goal. Share experience stories. Discuss how sending Reiki is going. Give oral history of Mrs. Takata. Reiki Level II attunement practice session. Review Reiki Level II class structure Instruction on preparing for a class (materials needed, business practices, etc.) Assignments: Practice Reiki Level III attunement.
Week Five
Read goal. Share experience stories. Discuss how sending Reiki is going. Practice Reiki Level III attunement procedure. Instruction on outlining Reiki Level III class structure. Review all attunements. Question period. Schedule additional class sessions if necessary.
End of Class - You are Reiki Level III Master/Teacher.

FAQ
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a natural healing system designed to assist in healing and help achieve balance. Reiki is administered by a practitioner, who serves as a conduit through whom the Universal Life Energy can be transmitted to the recipient, by either hands-on or distance healing techniques.
Practitioners may also practice Reiki self-treatments.
How does Reiki energy flow?
Reiki flows through our palms at different rates of speed, depending on various factors such as the extent of the recipient’s illness, degree of blockage, his or her readiness to accept change, and so on.
Is Reiki a form of faith healing?
No, Reiki is not a religion, nor is it based on the acceptance of any religious doctrine. Having a belief system is not a requirement for Reiki to work. Reiki does not infringe on anyone’s right to believe what he or she wishes. However, Reiki’s principles are spiritual in nature and do encourage spiritual empowerment and growth.
Who can benefit from a Reiki treatment?
Reiki’s gift of increased energy and vitality can be extended to anyone. It doesn’t matter what a person’s gender, race, intelligence, or financial status is. Reiki is not a healing energy reserved only for the elite, wealthy, educated, or spiritually evolved.
What does Reiki feel like?
Common Reiki sensations are heat or coolness, “pins and needles” tingling, vibrational buzzing, electrical sparks, numbness, throbbing, itchiness, and drowsiness.
What is a Reiki attunement?
A Reiki attunement is a ritual performed by a Reiki Master. The ritual involves energetic placement of Reiki symbols through a specific set of sequenced actions into the student’s crown and palms.
Will Reiki ever run out?
When you are giving a Reiki treatment to someone, you are giving of your time and your intent to assist, but you are not giving away any of your own energy. Reiki is in infinite supply. It never runs out.
What is the purpose of the Reiki hand placements?
Emphasis is placed on devoting five minutes on each hand placement so that no part of the body is neglected and to ensure that each body part is given equal consideration.
Do I need to direct the flow of Reiki?
Reiki will automatically go to wherever it needs to go with no mental involvement of either the practitioner or the recipient. However, when mental intention is used, a linear pathway is opened. This cleared route allows Reiki to flow more effectively to that part of the body where attention is most desired.
What purpose do Reiki symbols serve?
Independently, each Reiki symbol has its own unique purposes. The combined function of these symbols is to provide Reiki practitioners with focal points for their healing intentions.
Why is Reiki called “smart energy”?
Reiki is an intelligent energy because it knows which areas of the body most need healing and will automatically flow to specific areas where suffering or imbalance are prevalent.
