A Walking Meditation
This exercise will help you observe yourself when you go for a walk in the woods or the forest. The state of mind in which you walk will condition the experiences you have. We often walk through the woods in the same attitude as through the supermarket. The mind is in fact going over what we are going to do tomorrow, and the present slips by unnoticed.
First come into the present. Listen to your own breathing, feel the earth beneath your feet, and get the sense of how you are balanced.
Listen to how your mind is organising your walk: “I won’t go that way, there are some brambles….over there it’s muddy, so I won’t go that way….”
We are always giving ourselves instructions, imposing limits and forbidding things, when the joy of life is to release ourselves from limitations. When you surprise yourself doing it, don’t judge yourself, just smile. Then carry on and follow wherever your feet want to take you.
It is wonderful to realise that you are in a place you would never have found if you had only done what your mind was telling you or followed your old habits. It means you have let yourself be guided by your intuition - your higher self.
