Ingredients Water 1/4 cup Toor Dal 1 tomato 1 green chiili 1/2 tsp turmeric powder few curry leaves 1 inch piece ginger 1 tsp cumin seeds 1/4 tsp black mustard seeds 2 pinches asafoetida 1 lemon 1 1/4 tsp salt (or to taste) Few sprigs of Cilantro Method Cook the toor dal with water and 2 pinches of turmeric powder (like you cook rice, preferably pressure cooked) and mash. Add chopped tomato, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, turmeric powder, green chilli(slit in half), chopped/grated ginger, one pinch asafoetida and salt to approximately 3 cups of water and boil until tomato is cooked. Add cooked toor dal and stir. Simmer and let boil for 3 to 4 minutes. Add a cup or more water and simmer for few mins until froth is formed on the top. Take rasam off the stove, squeeze in juice of 1 lemon and mix. Heat a little ghee/ oil in a small pan. Add mustard and when it splatters, remove from stove and add remaining cumin seeds and asafoetida immediately. Pour over rasam. Garnish with chopped cilatro and serve hot with cooked rice. You can drink it as is like a soup too . Love Sridevi
