Reiki guides itself with its own wisdom, which means the practitioner serves only as a conduit of the universal energy.
Reiki is "non-polarised" subatomic energy that is released as a harmonic — (a signal or wave whose frequency is an integral (whole-number) multiple of the frequency of some reference signal or wave) into energy blueprints (e.g. the body) that are in a state of disharmony. Once it leaves the subatomic — (of or relating to particles that are smaller than an atom) world, it must polarise — (an expression of the orientation of the lines of electric flux in an electromagnetic field) because it is entering the physical world where it is acted upon by time.
Because it is, by nature, a harmonic, it will polarise and form a "mirror image" of any disharmonious frequency in that energy blueprint, thereby restoring normal harmony and wellbeing. This, in turn, accelerates the natural healing processes of the body.

That was a cool explanation, I will have to remember it next time some smartypants starts talking in complicated terms to prove that there is no such thing as Reiki ;D

If a mantra helps you tune in, then use it. Some people need to, or just like to say it, but it's not an absolute necesity.

I usually say to myself.
"May Reiki flow for the Highest Good"
My hands are in the Gasho position when I do this.
