Hi, I have been looking at an online course Chikara-reiki-do, run by Judith Conroy. I wondered if anyone else has heard of this, and is it suitable to enable me to get insurance and practise professionally in the U.K? I asked a Reiki Master about training, and she was more keen to tell me how much her course cost, and how I should pay, that it put me off.( It wasn't cheap!) I am a bit low on funds, so would appreciate it if any one knows about this, or has an opinion on learning reiki this way.
Thank you

Should have clarified that I will not be charging for giving reiki, like my spiritual healing, I do it for free. If someone wants to give a donation for energy exchange, I'm happy. Just need to be 'legal' in case of problems with the new act.

The Chikara-Reiki-Do method is taught by self attunement. Although it introduces all the information you would receive from a master, it also teaches some controversial things that border on religious belief. I say it borders on religious context, as it directly refers to God, and in its methods of doing so, could be rather offensive or contrary to certain religious belief systems. Unfortunately, it also precludes the possibility of receiving a documented lineage of mastery, which, if I do recall, is something that many of these new laws require for 'professional' practitioners. If this is a concern to you, you may wish to look into receiving an attunement from one of the masters here. Monetary cost is an issue for many people in today's world, and the reasons behind the original introduction of the cost, while valid, can be satisfied by other means. It is such a great issue that it is one of the main reasons this forum is here. The masters offering services here do not ask for money, but instead seek to satisfy the balance and bond of transfer in other ways.

I wish I had an answer for you,(about the UK) but I tell you that I live in the U.S. and in the state of Virginia you must have a massage therapist license to 'touch' someone and receive payment. You can have manipulation of soft tissue. My way around this is, I donate my time; and always ask the person if they want to be touched. However as you know, you don't have to touch someone in order to give treatment. It's funny to even have a business there is nothing that says you are a certified reiki master either. Spiritual things are so vague that they really don't know what to do with it, so it falls under the guidelines of massage therapist. I started by just emailing local government and asking them. It took them about 2 months before I got an answer, but I did get my answer even though I was pushing for it to be under spiritual rather than physical. Hope this helps and best of luck to you! love ruth

Thank you both for your replies. Yes, I do want certification and lineage, so I am glad I asked instead of just going ahead with it. I intend to treat the public, so I must have everything in place to allow me to do so legally. The repeal of the Fraudulent Mediums Act in the U.K, means that the public can sue if they have an issue with therapies. (As far as I understand it)

Hi lazuli This is a difficult one to answer..........my first response is for you not to go ahead and pay for the Chikara-reiki-do method as this certainly won't give you the lineage and certification which can help get insurance. There are a lot of companies in the uk now that offer holistic therapy insurance that covers a lot of therapies. Reiki is a difficult therapy to get insurance alone for as the insurance companies ask for 'recognised certification', but there is no government approved body to get training and certification from . You may want to start by contacting some insurance companies to ask them what they require to insure you for practising Reiki alone. Most people that I know who practise professionally have recognised qualifications for another therapy, such as massage, in order to get insurance, and then they add Reiki to the list of treatments they offer. love stef

Hi Stef, I do have insurance (from Balens) for my healing and Hypnotherapy. They also insure Reiki, but need to see the certificate that you have gained. That's why I am trying to make sure that any reiki 1,2 or 3 that I learn, is able to supply me with the certificate to prove that I have attained it. It's all becoming complicated, I am probably going to have to pay whatever to obtain it. Thanks for your help Lazuli

Hi lazuli There are people who offer certificates with free attunements.............but I don't know if they will be enough for insurance, you should contact your insurance company and ask them exactly what certification they require. love stef

Hi Sidney, Yes, that's just what I'm looking for. The only problem is that it's almost a 1000 mile round trip from where I am. I will keep looking for something similar nearer to me Thank you Lazuli

dear lazuli, i came across that situation as well a while back and i found out that if you happen to obtane an ordination into a form of lay ministry you will be covered because you will be considered a spiritual couselor and reiki is a form of spiritual counceling for those searching for more in depth meaning to a profound way of life and healing for lack of better words.
i hope this helps too.

Hi Lazuli, Sorry, I think you are cheated. Chikara-reiki-do is NOT real reiki but a business for Judith. I would suggest You to search real reiki school/master with lot of treatment experience. Best wishes! Hi, I have been looking at an online course Chikara-reiki-do, run by Judith Conroy.
