Earthangel, The symbols assist the practitioner in connecting with the Reiki energy. They are just that....symbols. It is not absolutely necessary to use them if you don't feel the need. If you can open yourself to the reiki energy without them, go for it.
The only rule with Reiki (as far as I am concerned) is there are no rules. You can do your distant healing sessions any way you are led to do them. You can use a photo. You can write the recipient's name on a paper and reiki the paper. You can visualize the person in front of you. You can use a proxy, such as a teddy bear or a doll. I have a large tumbled crystal that fits into the palm of my hand which I often use as a proxy for distant reiki. Intention is what allows the reiki magic to happen. You intend for the energy to reach the recipient, and it will!
Sounds to me like you are on the right track!
Love, Joanie
