The Maya, builders of fabulous cities lost to the jungle and time, started out as farmers in the Yucatan peninsula. Then in AD 250, the Maya started to build the great cities that we still see today, Copan, Palenque, and Tikal rose from the Yucatan jungle. Reaching the height of their culture, the Maya created calendars more accurate then the one we use today; they charted the path of Venus throughout its 260 day cycle.
The Maya were mathematicians, using the concept of zero centuries before Indian scientists discovered it, architects, building pyramids and palaces, and astronomers, calculating the cycles of the moon and Venus, farmers and traders, priests, sacrificing victims taken in battle to their gods, and kings, ruling from palaces, offering blood from the ears and tongue to their gods, and going to battle with their soldiers.
The Maya had a written language using letters to make words, not just pictures representing the word. The Mayan civilization began to decline in AD 800, when the large and powerful city states of Tikal, Copan, and Palenque were slowly deserted. Only a few cities, such as Uxmal and Sayil, in the Puuc area continued to flourish for another few centuries; then, they to were abandoned and lost to the jungle and time
