Reiki is a wonderful way of healing others and yourself, but a question I think not enough of us ask is - what about prevention?
Healing necessarily means 'something is broke' (or not working properly). One of the things I have noticed over the many years I have trained in martial arts is the lack of attention people (in general) tend to pay to their own physical health
You might be excused for thinking martial artists are all healthy... but the truth is many place more emphasis on learning 'this-or-that' special 'technique' (combat technique) than they do to their own wellbeing. Setting aside injuries incurred whilst sparring (fighting), I notice not enough people pay attention to their general health...
I am always slightly bemused when right after training people light up a cigarette, head to the pub and 'down a few', or get completely wasted on a Friday and/or Saturday night...
At the same time, some of these people are concerned about being very muscular, or being able to do some extravagantly elaborate spinning back kick (usually with a fancy name). They are completely missing the point.
If you do not take care of your body, you are not being sincere to yourself. The same is true of Reiki. With a healthy diet and sufficient exercise many minor ailments can be avoided. The long-term benefits of eating healthily and exercising are obvious. Reiki was never intended as a sticking-plaster that will save you from every excess!
There is a tendency in the western world (so-called 'developed' countries) to lead stressfull lives. That is compounded by eating rubbish. I don't just mean 'junk food' from take-aways, but all prepared meals and packets. They often contain chemical additives, preservatives, colourings and flavour-enhancers.
Next time you are in the store, buy fresh fruit and vegetables and make your own food. It takes minutes to make soup. Fruit is eaten raw. Grill meat or fish and don't add sauces - use garlic, ginger, onion, herbs and spices to perk up the flavour.
Look after your body through eating healthily, and you will feel so much more energised. It is cheaper too!

Reiki heals... if that's so, why doesn't it heal the body if factory processed foods are ingested?
Considering the Before-The-Heart-Attack photos of William Rand and the After-The-Heart-Attack photos of him, do you suspect his diet had anything to do with his heart attack?

Reiki helps heal any condition, that is without any shadow of a doubt. If somebody had a heart attack and Reiki helped them, maybe without Reiki they would no longer be here!? Surviving a heart attack (and facing one's own mortality) can be a very sobering experience, which may manifest itself in many ways subsequently (somebody may become more morose). Just because we know about (and practice) Reiki, does not mean we are better pre-disposed to facing-up to our own ultimate mortality. The main points in introduced in my earlier post - about healthy eating and healing can be summarised thus: 1) if you eat healthily and take moderate exercise, you can alleviate many minor ailments and prevent many others. 2) Eating natural foods and avoiding chemical additives, colourings, preservatives and flavour-enhancers is better for you. 3) Better to avoid a sickness than get sick and need treatment! If you are concerned about health (most Reiki practitioners seem to be), it makes good sense to familiarise yourself with proven techniques to maintain and/or improve physical health. Namaste

If somebody had a heart attack and Reiki helped them, maybe without Reiki they would no longer be here!? If the word "Reiki" is substituted in your sentence quoted above with "God," "Jesus," "Mary," "Qigong," "Qi," "Prana," or any number of similar words, will the sentence still be true? Just because we know about (and practice) Reiki, does not mean we are better pre-disposed to facing-up to our own ultimate mortality. Is it true that people who do not practice Reiki but practice healthy eating lifestyles, such as the newest one called The Prehistoric Diet, may become healthier?

Hi Kiyoshi,
to answer your 2 questions:-
A) no idea. I was specifically referring to Reiki (application of the healing technique).
B) very definitely a healthier diet will improve physical health. I know nothing about the so-called prehistoric diet (or any other fad diet for that matter), but any that is balanced, includes plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat/fish/poultry and avoids chemical additives as far as possible is better for you than one which is composed mostly of packet/pre-prepared food with lots of chemical additives.
Reiki Heals. Healthy diet and lifestyle (exercise) is preventative.

Hi Wudanmonk.
The Prehistoric Diet is relatively new, only emerging within the last couple years in the United States, and it is relatively simple as the name might suggest it is--eat like our ancestors did. Small portions, no processed foods, no beans, and that's all I remember of it at this time.
My diet is organic, and I only eat enough meat for my body to digest during the course of a single meal. Restaurants and most U.S. meals include portions of meat large enough to sustain a person for a few days, but the reality is that according to the USDA, the body can only digest up to 42 grams of protein through meat within a 2 hour period of time--and that means any amount consumed beyond that remains largely undigested in the intestinal tract and quite literally goes down the toilet.
When I have maintained a stereotypical U.S. diet, my weight increases to 200+ pounds within a years time (and I stand 5'7" tall). When I maintain the organic, small portion, no dairy, no soda, no processed food diet, my weight averages 165 pounds.
In my 15+ years of practicing Reiki, I have grown to believe that Reiki does not help the body heal, and William Rand's heart attack is the example I frequently cite when making that statement. During the AIDS/AZT Poisoning crisis, many diagnosed with AIDS and suffering AZT poisoning sought Reiki to be healed of AIDS... it didn't work, they still remained positive even after investing much of their savings in the what was then costly Reiki training. During one workshop I attended, the Reiki Master Teacher stated very emphatically to the class that if you are addicted to cigarettes, have smokers lung cancer, practice Reiki to heal the lung cancer, and do not stop smoking cigarettes, you are going to die from lung cancer (and she's right).
I believe that Reiki helps a person heal their mind, and in so doing, better empowers them along a path of self healing and self realization. That's a much more difficult path to take when approaching Reiki, just as is taking the responsibility for one's health by using preventative methods that you encourage people to use.
I find your advice and encouragement to be very sound, and hope that more teachers like you appear in the Reiki world.

Hi Kyoshi, thanks for the message and explaining about the prehistoric diet, I guessed it would be something along those lines but wasn't sure. I really think going for organic food (like you do) is the healthiest option where possible (surprising what you can grow in window boxes!). I try and eat organic where I can, though I must confess to 'eating badly' sometimes when I dine out (on my birthday recently, for example). Because I was previously competing at my sport(s) I was very focussed on eating food which would help me achieve maximal physical efficiency... then as I learned more about the Qi Gong I realised what was and wasn't good for my body to consume from a more general health perspective. Yes, you can only absorb a small amount of protein at any one time, which is why body-builders eat small portions of protein throughout the day. Also, different sources of protein are more or less readily absorbed by the body (so eating specific types of protein is necessary for optimal muscle-growth). I am not, and never have been, a body-builder though - I was more concerned with speed, flexibility and strength, than size of my muscles. Sugary drinks (sodas etc) are real killers - they rot your teeth, make you store the excess energy as fat, and longer term may contribute to type 2 diabetes. I had to stop drinking energy drinks for my sport as they were ruining my teeth but I have reaped the benefits (my teeth are stable now) and I have lost weight. If I was still competing I might use them in competition. You are right about Reiki not being able to heal everything. I do believe it can help with many/most sicknesses - just that some conditions are so detrimental there is no healing method or medicine in the world that can counter them entirely. Treated early and with a combination of healthy diet and exercise many illnesses may be effectively managed though... it helps if you are fit and healthy to begin with. For Reiki users I would really recommend learning to change your body through diet and gentle exercise with a view to prevention (rather than cure), and use Reiki as the support system for a strong foundation. If you smoke, drink excess alchohol, don't eat helthily or exercise, Reiki is not going to be able to do much for you long-term... Tai Chi, Qi Gong and other (gentle!) martial arts ( Bagua Zheng maybe) are wonderful ways of getting healthier. Only contemplate the external styles (karate for example) if you are already reasonably fit. I actually discovered Reiki because of the Qi Gong I do, which heals in a similar way to reiki (gathers Chi/Ki energy), and makes you physically strong. Thanks for your kind words Kiyoshi! Namaste Wudanmonk
